Remembering My Roots
I visited my dad’s grave today and was reminded of my roots. As I stood at the place where his body was buried, I thought of how connected to him I was, how I had come from him. Our hearts were united, and we both loved big. He would weep with the brokenhearted and taught me to do the same. What a feeling it was to truly be loved by him. I remember how he looked at me and really saw me. He valued me, just as I was, a little girl who had nothing to give. This was the love of my father and the roots that grounded me.
Deeper Than Earth’s Roots
So many long to experience this kind of fatherly love, but some dads aren’t there, or don’t know how to be, and others are afraid to even try. Yet, there is One who is able to meet our father-need, although we don’t always see Him this way. As people who believe in Jesus the Messiah, we need to open our hearts to the idea of God as our daddy.
And because we are his sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, so now we can rightly speak of God as our dear Father. Now we are no longer slaves but God’s own sons. And since we are his sons, everything he has belongs to us, for that is the way God planned. ~Galatians 4:6-7 (TLB)
It took losing my Dad for me to realize that I had a need that went deeper than earthly roots could touch. As great as my dad’s love was, he was still just a man. People will let us down, even if it’s leaving us at the end of their lives, but Papa-God is different. He is infinite and He is perfect love. God chose us, created us, and wants us to be in relationship with Him, forever. He desires us to respond to Him from our innermost beings.
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! ~1 John 3:1
Knowing Papa God
How can we know God as our Father? Ask Him to help you to know Him. Search His word to know how He thinks and acts and feels towards you. We all have a place deep down inside where we long to be known by Him; we just need to acknowledge our need.
When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen. Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed. God’s decree. ~Jeremiah 29:12-14 (MSG)
Oh, How He Loves Us
We’ve been told that God loves us, but something inside us longs to truly know His love in a deeper way. God made us with that desire; our connection with Him runs deep. In the beginning, God walked with Adam and Eve. He spent time with them in the garden. He wanted to be with them and know them as friends, as son and daughter. That’s still His plan. He wants to walk with us each day, speaking into each area of our lives, as our loving Father.
Grounded in Truth
God’s love for us runs deeper than our earthly roots. As we realize His great love for us, we outgrow fear and distrust. We become grounded in truth, and are free to grow as the children that our Father God envisioned us to be. As believers, we are grafted in to God and His roots enable us to become mighty sons and daughters.
