Coming to The King - Like a Little Child

Writer's picture: Denae HaasDenae Haas

Jesus, I want to be with You

I feel Your heart desiring it too

But so many things are calling —

Pretty things to want,

Wishes that I was better,

Mindless things to distract.

So many things calling to take my attention

Away from You.

Your’e calling too —

Your deep to my deep

Saying, “Come and be with Me,”

“Won’t you just come and sit with Me?”

But my face is smudged with dirt

My hands show signs of scrapping —

Fighting for my rights,

For what I want.

Too often I choose the shiny things,

Listen to the distracting voices,

Enter the world of the past.

They never stop calling, longing to have me.

My head is filled with thoughts of self-preservation,

My many imperfections;

I’m aware of the cracks always growing.

Why would You want to be with me?

Now I light the candle.

Close my eyes,

Quiet my soul.

Worship begins to flow,

My heart bows low,

Here in my room.

Distraction moves farther away

And The Light comes close

The Spirit of Jesus warming me,

Forgiving me,

Receiving me.

He is near — Christ is here.

I see myself as a little girl

In undershirt and underwear,

My arms held high —

He has a special dress for me

Made of light, like sunshine.

“Remember this,” He says,

“This is yours to wear.”

I spin and lift my arms,

Feeling special

Like a darling child — completely lovable,

Completely accepted with faults, cracks

And all.

“Come like a child,” He says.

“Come and let me wipe your cheeks.

Come and let me cover regrets,

Imperfection.

Let My Spirit fill every crack.

I’m more than the beautiful things of the world.

I am your Maker.”

I will always come running

Just like a little child,

Hurt and dirty from playing on the playground

With children just like me.

Hold me, Abba —

Your strong arms heal me.

Your deep love fills me.

My eyes are on You alone —

I’m spinning, lovable,

For The Man who stands Looking at me.

This Man is

Beautiful enough for me,

Strong enough for me,

Committed enough for me,

Bold enough for me,

Forgiving enough for me.

The smile of the King of all kings is more than enough

For me.

"For once you were darkness, but now in union with the Lord you are light.

Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth), trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord."

(Ephesians 5:8-10)
